about

Before I wrote this, I remember I had a disdain for "road songs". I remember making fun of songs like, Bob Seger's On The Road Again... isn't that what it's called? Anyway, after driving across the country a couple times, to chase my Rock and Roll dream at about 22 or 23, and becoming (as far as my narrow mind could see) rejected by the industry, broke and dumped by my label and my girlfriend, I remember calling my mother from a pay phone and telling her how I "get" those silly road songs. I wrote these lyrics in my van while driving across Kansas I believe. I my way back to WV, with my tail between my legs. I recited them into my cassette recorder. I'm certain that we hashed it out as a band at the very first rehearsal.

lyrics

Trucker's Misery

Dearth was a truck driver
Badly misnamed by his parents
You know, he took up the only profession he knew
Driving a semi to pay the rent
Dearth had a heart hard as the asphalt he drove upon
He drove only at night
And togetherness was a battle, one he never had to fight

Just like his daddy's dad's father before him he said
I don't mind driving alone!
Just like his daddy's dad's father before him he said
I don't mind driving alone!
And when they asked him how he hangs on he said
I don't mind driving alone!
And when they asked him how he hangs on he said
I don't mind driving alone!

(Ten gear grinding years later)

But one day Dearth just broke
And with one stroke
God gave his heart back to him
Lighting chain smokes and popping bad dope
To relieve the memories of them
Them forgotten babes who were once his slaves
Had all appeared on his windshield
But this was one field he could not yield
He went over the rail
Crashing head over tail
Ol' Dearth had died
Just like his daddy's dad's father before him

Just like his daddy's dad's father before him he said
I don't mind driving alone!
Just like his daddy's dad's father before him he said
I don't mind driving alone!
And when they asked him how he hangs on he said
I don't mind driving alone!
And when they asked him how he hangs on he said
I don't mind driving alone!

63 Eyes West Virginia

63 Eyes (1987-present) This Morgantown/Parkersburg WV based band ruled the rock landscape of their own minds and at times brainwashed listeners to love them with the passion of a sexist trucker on speed.
